AVIATION WARRANT OFFICERS
Aviation warrant officers fly some of the most exciting, technologically-
advanced aircraft in the world. If becoming an Army helicopter pilot or
fixed-wing pilot is your dream, Warrant Officer Flight Training (WOFT)
is where you can earn your wings.
The road to becoming a U.S. Army pilot will not be easy. It is rigorous
training that requires commitment well beyond initial qualification.
After you graduate from Warrant Officer Candidate School you will
move through several phases of training before graduating as an Army
aviator. All training is completed at the home of Army aviation,
Fort Rucker, Alabama.
Aviation Warrant Officer Basic Course - WOBC (3 weeks)
Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape SERE-C Course (3 weeks)
Initial Entry Rotary Wing Flight Training – Common Core (22 weeks)
Advanced Airframe Training (16 weeks)
Aviation Leadership Exercise (3 weeks)
Unlike the process of becoming a Technical Warrant Officer, there are no MOS feeders, technical
predetermination qualifications, or NCO grade that must be attained in order to access as an
Aviation Warrant Officer. The interview process is often referred to as the IERW Board. Initial Entry
Rotary Wing (IERW) positions are approved internal to the MOARNG by the State Army Aviation
Officer (SAAO).
Application packet format, submission guidelines, and IERW Board interview proceedings are
determined by the SAAO. Contact the MOARNG Warrant Officer Strength Manager at
[email protected] or phone at 573-659-1628 for assistance.
In addition to meeting physical standards for appointment outlined in Chapter 2 of Army Regulation
40-501, candidates for Army Flight Training must undergo a Class 1A Flight Physical Examination
and have results approved by Flight Surgeons at Fort Rucker, Alabama, prior to the selection board.
The Flight Physical must be less than 18 months old at the time the board convenes.
Visual acuity standards that must be met:
20/50 distant vision correctable with spectacles to 20/20
20/20 near vision
Aeromedical refractive error corrected by LASIK/PPK procedures are permitted. Aeromedical
Policy Letter (APL) guidance should be consulted before having the procedure performed.
Beginning 1 OCT 2020, 10-year contractual obligation as an active ARNG member upon acceptance
into, and upon completion of, Initial Entry Rotary Wing (IERW) training, per SA memorandum dated
03 JUN 20, subject: Change to Service Obligation for Army Aviators . This will run concurrently, not
in addition to, any other obligations.
