Radford MBA History
The graduate program in Business Administration was approved by the Radford Board
of Visitors in November of 1979, and submitted for approval to the State Council of
Higher Education. In 1982, the first cohort of MBA students at Radford University began
the program of study resulting in nine students graduating with their MBA in 1984. Our
MBA Program has been accredited by the AACSB since 1992. AACSB is the “gold
standard” for business programs and estimates that less than 5 percent of the world’s
business programs earn this level of quality to be accredited by AACSB. RU proudly
remains part of this elite community.
Davis College of Business and Economics (DCOBE)
Mission
History
The study of business began at Radford University during the 1960s with the offering of
Economics courses followed by the creation of the Economics major and the
Department of Economics in 1969. During the 1974-75 academic year, coursework in
other areas of business were added and the department was expanded to become the
Department of Business and Economics. Continued growth in the business area
resulted in the creation of the School of Business and Professional Studies in 1978. In
1982, graduate study in business began with the approval of the MBA program.
One of the historic buildings on the Radford campus, Whitt Hall, was renovated and
rededicated in 1983 becoming the new home to the College of Business and
Economics. In 1992, the College of Business and Economics received initial
accreditation of its undergraduate and graduate programs from the Association to
Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Both programs were reaccredited
by AACSB in the Fall of 1997 and most recently reaffirmed in 2017-18.
As a part of Radford University’s 2010 Centennial activities, the university broke ground
on a $44 million, 110,000 square foot state-of-the-art building. The new home for the
College was opened in August 2012 and in Spring 2016 was named Kyle Hall in
recognition of Penelope Kyle’s 11 years of service as President of Radford
University. In October 2018, the college was officially named the Sandra C. Davis and
William C. Davis College of Business and Economics. Sandra C. and William C. Davis
donated the largest gift in the history of the University to date.
Our mission is to provide an active
learning environment that develops
analytical and innovative business
professionals for the dynamic global
economy.

Academic & Student Policies
Class Registration
Registration for the MBA classes is restricted to individuals who have been accepted
into the MBA program or received approval from the MBA Director. It is highly
recommended for graduate students to register for classes during the early registration
period to ensure registration in desired classes. All scheduled MBA courses are subject
to a minimum enrollment of 12. Students admitted into the MBA program (who have
foundational knowledge deficiencies) must complete all deficiencies prior to enrolling in
MBA courses.

“register now”
Expectations of Academic Work
The College of Graduate and Professional Studies monitors the quality standards of all
Radford graduate work. To graduate, the student must have a minimum 3.0 grade point
average overall. In addition, every course in the Program of Study must be completed
with at least a grade of C. It is the policy of the graduate school that a student is not
allowed to have more than two C’s during their graduate studies or they will be
dismissed from the Radford Graduate College. For details, see “Retention and
Graduation Policy” section of this document or refer to your Graduate College Catalog
for specific policies and procedures governing this policy
(https://www.radford.edu/content/grad/home/admissions/graduate-catalog.html).
The quality of work completed is recognized by the assignment of grade points to
various letter grades. The student’s academic standing depends upon the number of
semester hours of work successfully completed and upon the number of grade points
accumulated. Radford University uses a four-point system in which points are assigned
to grades as follows:
A = 4.0 points
A- = 3.7 points
B+ = 3.3 points
B = 3.0 points
B - = 2.7 points
C = 2.0 points
F = 0 points
11
Some graduate students may be admitted to their program under “Conditional” or
“Conditional-Temporary” status. This means that they must satisfy specific conditions by
the end of a term specified in the admission decision. Some conditions govern
academic performance and may include earning a specific cumulative GPA as well as
earning a minimum specific grade in all courses specified at the time of admission
decision. If admission conditions are not satisfied, the graduate student will be
dismissed from their program.
More information on the “Conditional” and “Conditional-Temporary” policies can be
found in the Graduate Catalog; however, please be aware that the MBA has more
stringent policies governing the academic performance of students with “Conditional” or
“Conditional-Temporary” admission status. Our policies are as follows: “Conditional”
students must achieve a B or better in the first 3 courses (9 credit hours) of their
program. These conditional admission policies supersede those outlined in the
Graduate Catalog.
Not every first-semester graduate student is subject to admission conditions. If you are
unsure of your admission status, or the academic performance conditions you may be
held to, contact your program coordinator or advisor, or review your official acceptance
letter from Radford University’s Graduate College.
For more information regarding academic policies please visit:
https://www.radford.edu/content/grad/home/admissions/graduate-catalog.html
and select the catalog for your current year.
Standards of Student Conduct
Graduate students are expected to act in an ethical manner appropriate to academic life
and to meet the expectations expressed in the RU Standards of Student Conduct
Handbook. The Radford Standards of Student conduct Handbook is available for review
at: https://www.radford.edu/content/radfordcore/home/student-life/student-
handbook.html . Students are expected to become familiar with the content of this
publication.
Withdrawal Procedures
The MBA Program follows the Fast-Track Academic Calendar, which is updated on the
registrar’s website:
https://www.radford.edu/content/registrar/home/impact-student-resources1/fast-track-
academic-calendar.html
A student who wants to withdraw from a course may complete a withdrawal form in the
Registrar’s Office or notify the Registrar’s Office
(https://www.radford.edu/content/registrar/home.html ) in writing or via email that he or
she wishes to withdrawal from one or more (but not all) classes. The withdrawal is not
12
complete until the Registrar’s Office has been notified. Students must contact the Office
of the Bursar (https://www.radford.edu/content/bursar/home.html) to initiate a request
for refund of tuition if the class was dropped prior to the census date. A student who
drops a class prior to the conclusion of schedule adjustment will receive no grade. A
student who withdraws from class after schedule adjustments but before the last day to
withdraw from one or more (but not all) courses as posted on the Fast-Track Academic
Calendar will receive a grade of “W” (withdrawal). A student who withdraws from class
after this date will receive a grade of “F.” A student may not withdraw from more than
three graduate classes. Anything beyond the third withdrawal results in an automatic
“F.” When a student is granted an approved withdrawal from all courses for medical or
other non-academic reasons, the withdrawal grades will not count towards the three “W
limit.”
Retention and Graduation Policy
Good Academic Standing
Any student who maintains a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) in
graduate courses will be in good academic standing. Undergraduate courses may not
be taken to correct a GPA deficiency.
Grades of “C”
Only two course grades of “C” will be allowed to count towards the completion of any
graduate degree or certificate. (“Courses” include courses attempted at Radford
University while classified as a graduate student, including graduate courses, graduate
supporting coursework, and courses taken as a non-degree student.) When a student
earns their first course grade of “C” or lower, they will be contacted by the Graduate
College. When a student earns a second course grade of “C” or lower, they will be
contacted by the Graduate College and informed of the consequences for earning a
third “C.” When a student earns a third course grade of “C” or lower, they will be
suspended. (See “Suspension.”) A student who earns four course grades of “C” or lower
will be dismissed from the Graduate College. (See “Dismissal.”)
Academic Probation
Once a student has completed 6 credit hours and their cumulative GPA is at least a 2.0
but less than a 3.0, they will be placed on academic probation until they return to good
academic standing. (See “Return to Good Academic Standing.”) While on academic
probation, a student will be restricted to enrolling in no more than 12 credit hours of
coursework in any given semester or combination of semesters until they return to good
academic standing.
A student may be placed on academic probation up to two times: A student who has
been placed on probation but eventually returns to good academic standing will be
placed on probation again if the student’s cumulative GPA falls between a 2.0 and 3.0 a
second time. If a student’s academic record warrants being placed on probation for a
13
third time, they will not be placed on probation but instead will be dismissed from the
Graduate College. (See “Dismissal.”)
Return to Good Academic Standing
Once on academic probation, in order to return to good academic standing, a student
must earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 within the first 12 graduate credit hours
attempted after being placed on probation. A student who does not earn at least a 3.0
cumulative GPA within 12 credit hours or who cannot achieve a 3.0 cumulative GPA
within 12 credit hours will be suspended from the Graduate College. (See
“Suspension.”)
Suspension
A student will be suspended from the Graduate College under any one of the following
conditions:
(1) The student is placed on probation but cannot mathematically achieve a 3.0
cumulative GPA within 12 credits.
(2) After being placed on probation, the student completes 12 credit hours but does
not achieve a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
(3) The student earns a third course grade of “C” or lower.
If a student is suspended from the Graduate College, they may not resume the MBA
Program at Radford until at least 8 months (or four successive, 7-week sessions)
have elapsed. Return after suspension is not automatic and suspended students must
petition to resume their studies. (See “Return After Suspension”)
Return After Suspension
To return after the suspension period, a student must submit a “Petition to Return After
Suspension” form to the Graduate College for review. The form must be accompanied
by the following:
A letter from the student addressing why they seek to return, and why they
believe they are ready to do so.
A plan of study, developed in consultation with the MBA Director, that (1)
accounts for at least the next 12 credits of the students’ expected enrollment, and
(2) outlines how the student will return to good standing (i.e., the support they will
seek, etc.). If warranted, this plan of study also must include the expected time
table for retaking course(s) in which a grade of “C” or lower has been earned.
Signature of the graduate program coordinator of the student’s primary graduate
program
Signature of a graduate faculty member in the MBA Program.
The dean of the Graduate College has the final authority to allow a suspended student
to return to academic studies; however, the dean will consult with the graduate program
in making a decision. If a suspended student is not approved to return, they will be
dismissed from the Graduate College. (See “Dismissal.”) If a suspended student is
approved to return, they are restricted to enrolling in no more than 12 credit hours in
their first semester after returning, and they must enroll in the courses specified in their
approved plan of study. Upon completing 12 credit hours, the student must have earned
14
a 3.0 cumulative GPA to return to good academic standing; if good academic standing
is not achieved within the first 12 credit hours after the student has returned from
suspension, the student will be dismissed from the Graduate College (See “Dismissal.”)
Dismissal for Academic Performance
A student will be dismissed from the Graduate College under any one of the following
conditions:
(1) The student warrants being placed on academic probation for a third time.
(2) The student fails to achieve good academic standing after being placed on
probation, and the student is enrolled in a program that does not permit
suspension.
(3) A student is suspended and fails to return to good academic standing within 12
credit hours.
(4) Two calendar years have elapsed since a student has been suspended.
(5) The student earns four grades of “C” or lower.
(6) The cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0.
Dismissal results in the termination of one’s affiliation as a graduate student with the
university.
Admission After Dismissal for Academic Performance
A student who has been dismissed for academic performance from the Graduate
College may pursue graduate studies at the university after two calendar years. At that
time, they will be eligible to apply and must pay the application fee, submit supplemental
application materials, and be accepted in order to enroll in graduate courses.
