OBTAINING A MARRIAGE, CIVIL UNION LICENSE IN LAKEWOOD

Who should apply in Lakewood Township

Applicants who reside in Lakewood Township; or out of state couples who are getting married

in Lakewood Township NJ.

Where to apply

Couples who live in New Jersey apply for the marriage license

in the New Jersey municipality

where either party resides

. The marriage license is only valid throughout the state of New

Jersey.

If neither applicant is a New Jersey resident

, submit the application in the municipality where

the marriage ceremony will be performed in New Jersey. In this case, the license is only valid

in the issuing municipality and the marriage must take place in this township only!

Lakewood Township Registrar’s Office schedules marriage licenses Monday thru Friday by

appointment only.

Appointments are scheduled from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. 732-364-2500 ext. 5236

When to apply

Recommendation is to make an appointment at least four weeks before the ceremony. There

is a mandated 72 hour waiting period from the time of application until you can use your

license. Weekends are counted in the waiting period.

After the license is issued and picked up, it may be used in the state of New Jersey for (30)

thirty days, after which time the license expires.

Application requirements

• $28.00 fee (Cash or Check)

• Proof of identity by presenting a driver’s license, passport or state/federal/county

• Proof of residency such as a driver’s license, utility bill or bank statement (within

90 days) , tax return or lease

• A witness, 18 years of age or older

• Social Security number

Requested documents, but not required:

• A copy of your birth certificates to establish your parent’s names and related

birth information.

• If you have been previously married, or in a civil union, please bring divorce

decree or annulment documents.

• If your former spouse or partner is deceased, please bring the death certificate.

Blood tests are no longer required to obtain a marriage license in New Jersey
