Use this helpful guide with sample photosto qualify for historic vehicle registration.
Historic registration may be assigned to an antique vehicle which is at least 25 years old.
Vehicle requirements:
Owned as a collector’s item
Used solely for exhibition or educational purposes
Cannot be altered from the manufacturer’s original design in any way
Equipped for legal operation on NJ roadways
Historic registration must be renewed every three (3) years; there is no fee for renewal.
Vehicle with historic registration must be covered by minimum automobile insurance coverage
required by the State of New Jersey.
When applying for registration, two color photographs are required: front and side view, left or
right. Refer to the sample photos on pg. 2-4 of this guide for tips on vehicle qualification and
acceptable photographs.

This vehicle does not qualify because it is missing
the front grill and is therefore incomplete.
This vehicle does not qualify because it has been
altered from its original manufacturer design. The
most obvious giveaway is that the vehicle has side
pipes. This vehicle is eligible for Street Rod plates.
This vehicle does not qualify because it has a large
hood scoop that is not the manufacturer’s original
design.
This vehicle does not qualify because it has been
altered from its original manufacturer design. The
most obvious giveaway is that the vehicle has no
fenders covering the wheels. This vehicle is eligible
for Street Rod plates.
This vehicle does not qualify because it is not 25
years old or more (as of Jan 2010).
This vehicle does not qualify because it has a hood-
mounted tachometer and other instruments which
are not original.
